First Fruits

“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” Hebrews 13:16 (ESV)

"First fruits" is a ministry of sharing within the body of Christ here at Calvary Chapel Bakersfield where anyone who desires can participate. What started with one individual in our church family who lacked financial resources with regard to tithing, felt led of the Lord to bring the “first fruits” of their garden as a way to give to the Lord and minister to the needs of others in the body of Christ. In the spirit of giving those who would like to participate are invited to bring fruit and vegetables from their home garden or purchase items from your favorite grocery outlet and place them in the “first fruit” stand located under the breezeway outside the sanctuary where everyone is welcome to share in the gifts of others.

It’s easy to imagine this same kind of practice taking place in the early church that we read about in the book of Acts: “And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved” Acts 2:44-47 (ESV).

Blessings!

Pay It Forward Coffee

How It Works: Pay It Forward Coffee is as simple as it sounds. Just inform the cashier that you would like to “Pay It Forward” by paying for one or more cups of coffee that can be redeemed by customers in need. Your purchase makes it possible for someone who can’t afford a cup of coffee to enjoy our “feel good” coffee free of charge! Take a sticky note and write a personal message and place it on the “Pay It Forward” message board where those in need can choose a note that speaks to them. Customers in need just need to take a note from the message board and show it to the cashier to receive a free cup of coffee. It’s that simple, and they get to keep the sticky note as a reminder that people like you really do care.
